
Building 889 (BA80)
Introduction
As part of the North Area Consolidation Project (NA-CONS) at CERN’s Prévessin site in France, Buildings 889 (BA80) is undergoing envelope renovations to ensure long-term operational safety and reliability. BA80 serves as an access point for the TDC2/TCC2 underground caverns and hosts critical infrastructure services (cooling, ventilation, power supplies, and beam instrumentation).
Objectives
The renovation primarily addresses ageing infrastructure, frequent operational faults, leaks, and severe energy inefficiency without altering the buildings’ dimensions. The project focuses on replacing roof waterproofing and thermal insulation, installing external downpipes, upgrading safety equipment, repairing concrete spalling, and improving envelope thermal performance. Works will be carried out mainly externally to minimise disruption to ongoing internal activities.

Sustainability
Sustainability is focused on a substantial reduction in energy consumption and thermal losses. By replacing the building envelope with high-performance rock wool insulation and upgraded double-skin cladding, thermal losses for BA80 will be reduced by 75%.
