Introduction

The Façade Renovation Project concerns Buildings 376, 377 and 378, located on the French part of the CERN Meyrin site. Constructed between 1969 and 1970, these buildings support a range of essential technical activities, including engineering offices, mechanical laboratories, power converter testing, and the production and distribution of demineralised water, which is supplied to most of CERN’s technical installations. After more than fifty years of operation, the building envelopes require comprehensive refurbishment to improve their performance, extend their service life, and enhance the architectural appearance of this strategic technical complex, while maintaining uninterrupted building operations throughout the works.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the project are the safe removal of façade elements containing hazardous materials, including asbestos and lead, and the improvement of the buildings’ thermal performance to comply with current energy regulations. The refurbishment includes replacing the existing cladding, glazing and external joinery, renovating the façades of the building extensions, and enhancing the overall architectural quality of the complex with a modern and consistent appearance. The project will also improve roof safety through secure external access and permanent fall-protection systems, while upgrading emergency exits to meet current safety standards. The works will be carried out in carefully planned phases to ensure that all technical activities remain operational throughout the construction period.
