CERN BIODIVERSITY ACTION PLAN

The principles of sustainable development suppose not only a change in practices, but also a transformation of how we envisage urbanised nature.

The CERN land reserve has a very high environmental value because of its geographical location and the richness of its natural environments (agricultural and forestry plots, rivers).

The Biodiversity Strategy aims to guarantee our long-term well-being by reconciling the development of activities on our site while conserving and even improving the biodiversity of our territory.

To that purpose the Green Spaces and Biodiversity Service (SCE-SAM-CE) has implemented management methods and environmental measures in favour of biodiversity, which is at the heart of CERN concerns.

SCE department is committed to promoting it as a mainstream factor in its strategic policy and a key element for any construction or renovation project.

An action plan was developed based on a clear inventory of the exisiting species, on the assessment of their current status, on the recommended measures developped by our experts and the enforced rules in the Host States.

It includes 15 measures:

  • Integrate and take into account sites with biodiversity issues (GIS integration)
  • Identify and take into account biodiversity issues in the pre-project/work phase
  • Reduce light pollution
  • Inventory of the tree patrimony
  • Reinforce the hedgerow network on the CERN domain
  • Promote sustainable agriculture on the unfenced CERN domain
  • Improve the differentiated management of green spaces and natural areas
  • Renew the CERN forest management plan and integrate a biodiversity component
  • Develop and implement a tree planting plan, particularly to combat heat islands
  • Implementation of measures for the fight against invasive species
  • Elaborate a communication plan about biodiversity at CERN
  • Vegetable gardens
  • Market gardening
  • Conservatory Orchard
  • Beekeeping.

CERN Eco-Actions club

There are many strides and new innovative ways to contribute to a greener future, and there is also a long list of clubs at CERN, but have you ever heard about the Eco-Actions Club?
