The SCE department prioritizes recycling and reusing materials when renovating a building. The large sectional door of Building 168 is a telling example.
With a design characteristic of CERN’s architectural style, this building combines office areas, laboratory space, and an industrial workshop where the CMS crystals for the calorimeter were assembled, fondly known as the “Crystal Palace”.
Its existing large sectional door had good technical performance at the time the building envelope was renewed in 2022. However, its appearance had aged over time and was inconsistent with the new facade elements. It was therefore decided to cover it with a rewarding and emblematic sticker showing a particle collision in a detector. The visual was created by CERN’s design office. With this little final touch, the building displays great aesthetics and careful finish.
