Bike Sharing Pilot has been a success

As a result of the CERN community's wide adherence to Bike Sharing Pilot, Mobility Services has increased its fleet with users now having 130 e-bikes, e-scooters and regular bikes at their disposal.

Bike Sharing

In May of 2022, the Mobility Services increased from 30 to 80 its e-bikes fleet and from 10 to 20 its e-scooters fleet.  Which means that now CERN campus has 130 e-bikes, e-scooters, and regular bicycles at full disposal to be used by all CERN’s community.

The service is particularly appreciated during summertime since it is a reliable eco-friendly option to circulate around both CERN sites, avoiding the use of a car or any other way of transport that implies the emission of pollutant gas to the atmosphere.

The proof of this is how the number of rentals per day and active users has been gradually increasing. Since the week of 14th of March 2022, the day Covid level 1 was activated at CERN, the number of active users per week has increased from 93 in the week of 14th to 20th of March to 514 in the week of 18th to 24th of July. In the same exact period, the number of rentals per week increased from 361 registered rentals to 2,033, proving the success of the Bike Sharing service within the CERN’s community. Overall, of the 33,389 rentals recorded since the start of this service on 12 August 2021, 73.69% of users opted to rent an e-bike relegating the e-scooters to second choice (17.18%) followed by regular bikes (9.13%).

This service is complementary to the regular bicycle rentals available at the Mobility Centre which allows people to go home with their bicycle while the e-Bikes, e-Scooters, and Bike Sharing Service allows them to move across the sites from station to station according to the principles that e-bikes or regular shard bikes can be used to move intra and/or inter-site, and e-scooters can only be used to move intra-site.
