The SAM-TG Geomatics team at CERN has completed a significant project to gather the locations of essential services on campus.
The team has identified 89 types of services, divided into 16 categories. Categories include registration services such as access card readers, locks, and keys; food and drink options like water fountains and vending machines; health and safety facilities including dosimeter readers and medicine cabinets; sanitary amenities like public showers and hygiene products for women; mobility resources such as bike parking, bike pumps, and shuttle stops with timetables, and more. These locations are now available in a new POI GIS layer, accessible as well through maps.cern.ch and soon in the future CERN Campus App.
Additionally, nearly 9,000 panoramic photos have been integrated into the GIS Portal, allowing users to virtually explore CERN sites such as SPS and LHC. The project also involved the acquisition of highly accurate laser remote sensing data (lidar) in the form of point clouds with a density of around 500 points/m2, which can be used for construction projects and building modelling.
This comprehensive effort aims to enhance accessibility and save valuable time for staff, visitors, and researchers at CERN.
