The B777 project is pursuing two green building certifications: BREEAM (Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method) and the WELL Building Standard™. BREEAM evaluates buildings for their low environmental impact throughout their lifecycle, while WELL focuses on creating spaces that enhance human health and well-being.
BREEAM and WELL certifications have requirements that both evaluate air and water quality, thermal, acoustic and visual comfort, building materials and pollution. On the one side BREEAM has a strong focus on energy consumption, minimizing waste (during construction and operation), pollution and impact on site ecology; on the other side WELL adds multiple requirements related to physical and mental health, such as promoting physical activity, providing healthy food options, providing spaces for relaxation and stress management resources, and promoting diversity and inclusion.
Each certification is achieved through a credit system based on rigorous evidence, including design and construction documents, performance tests and policies. For BREEAM, the project is targeting an “Excellent” level, and for WELL, a “Gold” level. The submission for BREEAM's Design Stage review is planned for early 2025.
This effort is collective, requiring contributions from the SCE department, alongside with HSE, HR, and external consultants. The process, coordinated by the PPM project team, not only underscores CERN’s commitment to environmental sustainability and staff well-being, but also sets a benchmark for future projects.
