Charging station for private electric vehicles
A charging station for private electric vehicles is available to the CERN community.
The dedicated area is located just before the Meyrin border crossing (on the Swiss side) and can be accessed via the Chemin de Berne. A CERN access card is required to enter. The electricity will be supplied by the Geneva utility provider, SIG. The charging cost will be borne by the user in accordance with the SIG terms and conditions and the SIG-Move pricing system (see prices). These spaces may only be used for charging purposes. No parking is allowed.
The creation of these six charging points is part of the SCE department’s overall action plan to provide the CERN community with sustainable transport options.
FAQ
Is the charging compatible with the standard RFID cards that most owners have or is there a special application required?
For the use of the charging stations, it is not necessary to have a “Move” subscription. Charging without a subscription is possible (link) via a credit card or a mobile application. It is also possible to use the available Move subscriptions.
If the car is left there for a duration longer than the time to charge, is there a penalty?
There is no penalty related to the connection time of the electric vehicle. However, the maximum authorised stay in the parking lot is set at 4 hours. This is enough time for an almost complete charge depending on the type of vehicle.
How much does the electric charging cost?
The cost of charging depends on various factors, such as whether you have a subscription and the type of subscription. The rates with a Move or SIG card can be found on their website and depend on the type of card. The price with other compatible subscriptions/cards depends on the contract of the said card. It is recommended to check before charging. The price without any subscription is 70 cents CHF per kWh (it is recommended to check before charging as these prices may vary).
Are there penalties for not disconnecting the vehicle from the charging station?
In the case of CERN charging stations, since billing is not done by time, there is no surcharge for exceeding the charging time. However, the parking time is limited to a maximum of 4 hours.
What is the power and charging time of a vehicle?
The CERN charging stations have a power of 22 kW. A standard charge lasts between 2 and 4 hours.
What type of cable should I use?
A certified type 2 cable according to European standards is necessary to use the AC charging stations. The DC charging stations are equipped with CHAdeMO and CCS plugs.
