Future Circular Collider (FCC)

Description of the project Responding to a request from the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study explores the feasibility of high-performance colliders housed in a new 100 km circumference tunnel. The FCC study is developing designs for a new research infrastructure to host the next generation of higher performance particle colliders to extend the research currently being conducted at the LHC, once the High-Luminosity phase (HL-HLC) reaches its conclusion in around 2040.

SCE contribution

The mandate of the FS Civil Engineering team is to:

  • co-ordinate the civil engineering studies for the Future Circular Collider from feasibility and technical design towards construction preparation. the scope of the civil engineering work package includes underground structures, surface buildings and site access. These studies require collaboration with the TG (Technical office & Geomatics) section in the SCE department.
  • liaise with other FCC Work Units, mainly Technical Infrastructure, to integrate the multi-disciplinary infrastructure and machine design requirements into civil engineering studies.
  • provide input into the host states processes for the definition of placement of the FCC tunnel and surface sites.
  • lead the site investigation activities through planning, design and execution stages. In conjunction with the procurement team at CERN, to prepare and manage the procurement and contractual arrangements with outside parties, industry experts and contractors.
