Water management: a sticking point of SCE Consolidation Programme

SCE Consolidation programme

Since a few years, water management is fully integrated in the CERN infrastructure construction or consolidation processes.
New construction projects firmly embed water management and infiltration into the Infrastructure Request Process (IRP) and technical specifications.
The consolidation programme, managed by SCE-SAM, not only includes maintenance and upgrades of water infrastructures, but also inventory and codification of equipment and water systems.
The renovation of Restaurant 1 (B501) carried out in 2023 is a good example of these commitments. It included refurbishment of sanitary premises, overall recovery of installations, upgrade of hot and cold water circuits, improvement of DHW production installations (hot water tanks and equipment with high standards of food and sanitary quality), installation of softener groups (in particular for supplying fresh water to food preparation areas and washing tunnels with water of excellent quality) and removal of part of the cold water supply (when redundant with the DHW) to considerably reduce consumption. In other less-frequented points, the renovation of the sanitary blocks also includes the installation of waterless urinals (Urimat) equipped with a cartridge cleaning system to reduce water consumption.

At completion, the renovation of B501 has been recorded in a 3D report of the installations. Detailed plans of water facilities, including meticulous transcriptions of measurements have been sketched out along with data collected by Franck Moro. These records and proactive approach are essential to maintain an effective and accurate consolidation plan, to control our resources, ensure compliance with CMMS standards, and build lasting solutions.
